The piping colors and layout seen on the side of the industrial building was inspired by the Microsoft Windows 3D Pipes Screensaver.

The Spatter screensaver:

was used for the splatter on the concrete pad underneath the yellow pipes.

Migrating south, a vee of Canada geese gets scattered by air turbulence as they take a right turn to head for safe waters 40 miles away.

Did you count them?

There are 93 Canada geese in that flight.  Not a lot, but more than usual.

The setting sun imparts a golden hue to the contrail of an airplane about to fly out of view.

Long and short of contrails

Atmospheric conditions cause airplane engines to form exhaust contrails.  These are caused by the hot and moist engine exhaust gases mixing with the cold air.   Long contrails mean the air at the flight level is very humid.  Short contrails indicate drier air and a lack of water vapor in the atmosphere at that altitude.  Very low relative humidity air will rarely produce a contrail.

Years of weather exposure and too diligent cleaning have worn down the faces of the bricks in this wall.

The shadow cast by the setting sun can make a person seem just a bit taller than they really are.  This shadow panoramic was created from two images of the street beneath our feet.

While the blue directional arrow marking the underground utility infrastructure is fading, the paint on the "V" of the water cover remains, brightly pointing the way.

The sun-fading of the wall paint is made evident when the original color paint is used to touch up the wall around the door. 

It appears that the touch up painter did not cover up the rust streaks below the door.

This bronze plate inset into the sidewalk beneath our feet identifies the electrical utility as "75B".

That electrical utility cover has a 15 x 15 rectangle cross hatch pattern.  The oval emblazoned with ELECTRIC SERVICE and a lightning bolt provide ready identity.

White onions in the bin at the vegetable stand await a buyer.

Ginkgo glow

Gingko or ginkgo?

Fallen onto the sidewalk of the street beneath our feet, this ginkgo biloba leaf glows neon green.

Street rainbow

Rainbow drip

A brief rain shower revealed this petroleum product drip that had previously not been seen in the street beneath our feet.  The colorful "rainbow" effect is caused by constructive and destructive interference.  

Cotton Candy and Sno Cones

Unusual choices of kerning, tracking, fonts, and colors make this refreshment stand sign an attention grabber; it also adds to the slightly unreal feeling of being at the fair.

Mellow in yellow

This lemony yellow 1941 Willys coupe takes a short break from cruising with a leisurely stop at the beach.

Awaiting restoratives, this 1950 Dodge pickup truck shows off its typography and design elements:

The frontal three quarters view of the pickup truck.  At some time, it was painted with a high gloss clear coat that is now peeling.  

Summer and swimming pools

Summer vacation can be fun except sometimes at the swimming pools.  This letter relates some events from the summer of 1997; the transcription is below each page.

about twelve - thirty in the morning

I went swimming up

North Attleboro Pool once this summer.

The deepest end is 11 feet.  But there 

are ropes to separate the diving and the 

swimming.  In the /t/h/e swimming

part the water is 5 feet at the highest 

place.  And as I said before the highest

in the diving section is 11 feet.

You can't go past the

ropes to swim if you do you will 

be put out.

And today I went swim-

ming up East Side Pool.  There (Ther) aren't

any ropes in this pool because the

deepest end is about five feet.  There 

isn't and diving at East Side

Pool.

The boys up there are fresh.

They dunk you, and dunk, you and

splash you, and chase you.  You really 

have a hard time swimming or trying 

to swim.  Well I hope you have a 

vacation, as I hope the last of your vaca-

tion is nice.  Because you have less 

than two months to enjoy yourself.

This letter, from 1997, was found inside the Spring 1954 edition of Reader's Digest Condensed Books.  The front cover of that edition flourishes a floral leafy pattern:

The faded paint on this sign reveals where the sign painter used a fully loaded brush and where that brush was running short.

 

Update: a recent site visit reveals that this sign has been removed and the storefront is being renovated.

Cracking open the gall on a genus Solidago stalk reveals the Eurosta solidaginis pupa within.

Sunlight reflected off a car hood onto a slightly shaded wall creates a collection of curves and patterns.

Up in the air

The engineer was very careful when parking this Budd car on a siding in the rail yard - the tracks end in mid air!
