Budd and buddy

Budd and red commuter car
"Stripey" and "Red"

The Budd car (BC-15) has a friend - a red (number 120) interurban car.

The red (No. 120) car is a Model 55 gasoline car that was built by the J. G. Brill Company of Philadelphia.  It went in to service in 1929 as a track inspection (Sperry Rail Service No. 105).  During WWII, it served as munitions car for Remington Arms.  Later, it was painted bright yellow and was at the Branford Electric Railway Association before ending up at a trolley museum.  At present, it is here.

Sitting at a siding

This 1952 vintage boxcar was originally with the New York Central and more recently known as BCLR 4001.  Now grey-painted, this 40-footer is seen at the Pier siding.  Here it is presented as a relaxed view 3d stereograph.

Stairing at a fence

fence and stairs and signal tower
... a stairway to ...

Sometimes, no longer used infrastructure is just left in place.  These barely noticeable stairs lead from the railroad tracks at the Piers signal mast up to a ... fence?

Call box

telephone box by railroad tracks
Call me?

This railroad call box stands ready for use at any time.  Here, at night.

These railway telephone boxes are used by the Dispatcher or the Maintenance of Way or the train crews to communicate with each other.  The striping provides additional visibility.  This box is not labeled; it is reminiscent of the train telephone boxes that had been installed on the Boston & Maine Railroad.

Caution - do not step on cracks

Railroad siding bridge over river
A bridge to cross

Spending some time by the river at the end of the day is a great way to relax.

Before you ask, yes, I have been across and back - very carefully.

Switch in place

Industrial narrow gauage rail switch
No longer in use

The remnants of a narrow gauge railway and switch have been left in place at an industrial site that no longer uses their light railway to move its heavy equipment between buildings.

Budd car on a siding

Budd car on siding

Up in the air

The engineer was very careful when parking this Budd car on a siding in the rail yard - the tracks end in mid air!

This sudden ending scene is presented as a relaxed view 3d stereograph.

Snow on the tracks

Rail road in snow
Snow-bound!

The undisturbed snow around the railroad station and on the rails tells the erudite traveler that the train has not been by this day.

This scene of a snow-bound station is presented as a relaxed view 3d stereograph.

Red and blue caboo

One caboose, two caboo, three cabeese, four - cabess? caboss?

Red and blue cabooses
Red and blue cabooses

The red caboose is on the main line, awaiting clearance to head southbound; the blue is on the Pier siding.

Two cabooses red and and blue
Two cabooses in the cold rain and snow

The red caboose is a N5B class, the blue is a "cupola" type.

Red Old Colony blue Boston and Maine cabooses
Old Colony and Boston and Maine meet again

The red caboose sports the colors of the Old Colony railroad.  The blue caboose wears the venerable Boston and Maine livery.

The N5 class was introduced in 1914 by the Pennsylvania Railroad as the first all-steel caboose.  This red one was originally with the PRR; it is thought to be of 1920s vintage.  The blue caboose was originally a wooden caboose.  It was rebuilt by the B&M on the original frame but with a steel body.  A closer look shows it to be shorter by a few feet than the "usual" caboose length.

All three photos are relaxed view 3d stereographs.

River reverie

Wriver wrevere-ee

The bridge across the river carried a railroad spur to the factory building.  On one side, the former factories have been re-purposed for offices, and and there is planned re-purposement on the other.  Still, the river flows and greenery grows.

Budd car

Budd car, view 1

Budd car, view 2

A relaxed view stereogram of a Budd car (also called a Buddliner or a Budd Rail Diesel Car) parked in the afternoon sun, waiting the next service run.  It is coupled with a passenger car.  These two 3d sets show the great depth that can be achieved with 3d photography.
