Green water

water cover in cement
What more?

Dog paw prints, the pour date, more "something" impressions, a partially scratched in name, partial wipe-outs, other unidentified markings - this small concrete sidewalk slab is covered with them.  The bright green water utility cover ensures that this feat in the street beneath our feet catches the eye of the casual passer-by.

Green milk

Stack of green milk cases
Diamonds or squares

A stack of green and black milk crates placed outside a grocery store awaits their pickup.

Without precisely measuring them, it is not certain if those are squares or diamonds?  There are plenty of them!

Ripe and ready

two pineapples
Close up

There is something that seems unsettling about getting this close and personal with a pineapple.

Shoe-shined cap

Scully Unifil cap
Worn but still readable

Persistent foot traffic has left the dome of this utility cap worn and shiny.  There is enough lettering left on to identify it as a SCULLY - UNIFIL (R) - B.S.A. NO - FUEL OIL cap.

Gas in a square

Inset gas
No guessing here

The text on this square GAS utility cover that is seen in the street beneath our feet clearly informs the passer-by as to the purpose of the cover.

In the sidewalk

A survey marker in the sidewalk bears little notice but performs an important duty when called to do so.

Two sills

These window sills - and window frames - have not been re-varnished since they were put in, leaving the wood grain exposed to view.

Right side of window sill
The right of another

Years of exposure to the southern sun has dried out the springwood, leaving the summerwood proud.  A low sun angle enhances the lines, texture, and waves of the wood grain.

From the age of the building and the color of the wood, it is possible that this wood is American chestnut.

The O in Hotpoint

O in HOTPOINT
"O", "O", and "O"

That "O" is the second "O" in the word HOTPOINT.  This enamel metal neon sign served a store that sold Hotpoint and other brands of appliances.   Restored, the sign now lights up for an establishment in zipcode 02809.

This 'in context' view is presented as a relaxed view 3d stereograph.

Neon HOTPOINT sign
Read the reflection

This neon sign is one of possibly four such signs in the USA.  Three of these signs are functional and light up.  The fourth appears to be for sale but needs restoration.

Yellow melon

Melons in a box
Ellipsoids in a box

A box is enough to keep these mellow yellow canary melons - named so after the color of the bird - from getting away when a buyer approaches them.

Rus-Tee

Rusty hatch and railing
Ring o' rust

This flush-with-the-deck watertight T-handled hatch is so rusty, one wonders if it would even open?  If it did open, would it seal properly when closed?

Choptank and Double Skin

Barge Double Skin 56 and tug Choptank
Off loading

Ripples in the water reflect an oil tank barge and its tug at an offloading facility.

Both the tugboat "Choptank" and the oil barge "Double Skin 56" belong to the Vane Brothers Company of Baltimore, Maryland.  The company has been in operation since 1898.

The oil barge is of the 50K BBL capacity class; if loaded 100% full, it could hold 56K+ BBL.  It was built in 2006 by Jeffboat of Jeffersonville, Indiana.  That company closed down in 2018; the site on the Ohio River had located a shipyard since 1834, initially as the Howard Shipyard, which built steamboats.

The tugboat "Choptank" is the fifth "Patapsco" class tug designed by Frank Basile of Entech and Associates of Houma, Louisiana.  It was constructed by Thoma-Sea Boat Builders of Lockport, Louisiana.  In all, fifteen "Patapsco" class tugboats were produced between 2004 and 2009.  Naval architect Frank Basile passed away in 2018; over 600 vessels of his designs were built.

Green tab

metal tab painted green
Hanging and waiting

Firmly attached to the facade of an old building, the original purpose of this hooked metal tab is long forgotten.  It remains functional to this day, hanging ready for use if it should be asked to do so.

Orange and grey

Even with the outside and inside signage, the food service equipment, and the customer seating having been removed, this combination of grey and orange interior colors in this closed establishment readily identify it as once having been a franchisee of a multinational doughnut cookery and coffee dispensary chain.

The customer entrance is on the left side; the doorway to the "back room" is seen in the far distance.

The customer entrance is on the left; the counter layout directs customers to the order and pick up area.
