Wood and brass, marble and glass

post office and custom house
Southern view

The south entrance of this United States Custom House and Post Office building is presented as  relaxed view 3d stereograph.

The entrances to the building are flanked by bronze lamps.

Imposing

The lamps are almost 6 feet in height.  The big panels of textured "glass" in the lamp are now plastic.  The original glass was curved, as is the plastic that is in there now. When the original glass was damaged, it may have been too costly to repair or replace it with the same curved and textured glass, or to even find a replacement for that style of glass.

The entrance doors have their PULL door plates.  These inform the patrons to "pull on the handle".

The brass work on the table top shows signs of former accoutrements.

Patrons can gaze out the window as they use the table.

This main post office building was completed in 1931.  It was modeled after the main building of the United States Postal Service in New York City, now known as the James A. Farley Building.

Two sills

These window sills - and window frames - have not been re-varnished since they were put in, leaving the wood grain exposed to view.

Years of exposure to the southern sun has dried out the springwood, leaving the summerwood proud.  A low sun angle enhances the lines, texture, and waves of the wood grain.

From the age of the building and the color of the wood, it is possible that this wood is American chestnut.

Two panes

Window with rippled glass
Ripples in glass windows

The sunlight shining through a window on the sunny side of the building reveals the patterns of two window panes in a window on the shady side of the building.

It is hard to tell if the patterns in these glass panes are the same or different.  They could be the same, one glazed with the pattern facing in and the other facing out.

Reflecting on a reflection

Windows reflected in puddle

Upper convergence

The two image planes - the windows reflected in the puddle and the surface of the puddle - converge at the top of the photograph.  This reflection of windows in a puddle is presented as a relaxed view 3d stereograph.

Frosty the window

Who tells the frost how to do this?

Frost on window 1 of 3

Frosty one (of three)

Frost 2 of 3

Frosty too (of three)

And to do it different each time?

The resulting multiple refractions from a bright LED shining through four sheets of plate glass creates this double string of pearls.

Only helping

step ladder
Folding step ladder and cardboard

The folding step ladder in the store display window allows the shop keeper to put products high up on the display shelves.  Neither the ladder itself, nor the flattened cardboard boxes protecting the floor of the display window, are for sale.

Reflective reflection

Multiflection

The building across the street and the sky and clouds and the utility wires are reflected in the plate glass of the store front window and in the curlicue-filamented light bulb.

Sunlight through a window

Window in the afternoon sun

The afternoon sun shining through the Duraglass type glass of this deeply recessed window creates light and deep shadow.
