Now called by another name

This cross hatched manhole cover is seen in the street beneath our feet.  The company identity oval interrupts the orderly layout of the "=", "-", and "|" elements that are used in the design of this utility cover.  

 

Originally called the United Electric Power Company, the name was changed to that seen on the manhole cover on November 30, 1927.  This cover would have been produced some time after that.

The comment by anon at 12:37:00 intrigued me to look up that reference.  Hi Nabor is "your Home Grown Supermarket - since 1963" in Baton Rouge.  It has three locations.  In Google Street View, each store has a white vehicle standing in front of the store on the left side:

Bare to the walls

 

Nothing left behind

With the closure of a store, the interior was gutted to the bare walls, leaving behind an empty storefront. 

 

Most of the items on the outside back wall were also removed. 

 

Red sign left behind

The red "Video Recording In Progress" sign was left behind, reminding the casual passerby that video recordings are in progress.

The tomatoes are from Guatemala, the company is in Kingsville, ON, they are on sale at a store in Queens (New York City), the weight is one and one-half pounds, the price is ninety nine cents per box, the sign is a classic.

The sidewalk in front of a closed and shuttered 99 cent store is good place to stop for a rest on a hot and sunny day.

Without precisely measuring them, it is not certain if those are squares or diamonds?  There are plenty of them!

The O in Hotpoint

 

"O", "O", and "O"

 

That "O" is the second "O" in the word HOTPOINT.  This enamel metal neon sign served a store that sold Hotpoint and other brands of appliances.   Restored, the sign now lights up for an establishment in zipcode 02809.

This neon sign is one of possibly four such signs in the USA.  Three of these signs are functional and light up.  The fourth appears to be for sale but needs restoration.

Written on the steel basement doors of a discount store, and hidden by the store's outdoor merchandise stand, years later this graffiti remains pristine, and, still as undecipherable as when it was first written.

A tale of three bottles

Aspirin 140 - 125 - 100

These three bottles of aspirin were bought over the past couple of years at a local dollar store.  During that that time, the price has remained the same - one dollar per bottle.  A closer look at the labels tells a different story.  The quantity in each bottle has gone down.

Some numbers:

Price per aspirin:

$1.00 for 140 aspirin = $$0.007143 = 0.715 cents each

$1.00 for 125 aspirin = $0.008 = 0.8 cents each

$1.00 for 100 aspirin = $0.01 = 1 cents each

If the quantity remained the same but the price went up:

140 aspirin (at 140 price per) = $1.00

140 aspirin (at 125 price per) = $1.12

140 aspirin (at 100 price per) = $1.40

100 aspirin (at 140 price per) = $0.72

100 aspirin (at 125 price per) = $0.80

The exterior of this store was previously seen here.  With that left window now uncovered, one can peer inside as the store is being renovated.

What is interesting about this store interior is not that it is a work in progress, nor all the doors and stairways at the back, but the rod trusses and turnbuckles below the beam that are holding the building together.

The folding step ladder in the store display window allows the shop keeper to put products high up on the display shelves.  Neither the ladder itself, nor the flattened cardboard boxes protecting the floor of the display window, are for sale.

Green cabbages await their fate at the corner fruit and vegetable store.

Located on the south side of the store, the heads are sheltered from direct sunlight by shade from an overhanging roof; sunlight reflected from the sidewalk provides the high light from below.

The storefront of this closed florist shop is so neat and well kept up that one thinks the store is still open; it is not.

Impersonation Of A Lady

"Impersonation of a Lady" was published by Maude Parker in 1934.

The Redwood Library of Newport, Rhode Island acquired the book through the Bookshop for Boys & Girls, a book store operated by the Women's Educational & Industrial Union, then located at 270 Boylston Street in Boston.

The book was copyrighted by Maude Parker on August 28, 1934; the edition notice page lists the copyright to Maude Parker Pavenstedt, her married name.  Born on July 30, 1892, she passed on November 12, 1959.  Her husband, Edmund W. Pavenstedt, renewed the copyright on  September 5, 1961.

The Redwood Library entered the book into its holdings on November 3, 1934 under the catalog number P2272i, using the Cutter classification system.  The copyright page shows their unique cataloging system. 

Inside back cover due dates and library rules

The book was first borrowed on November 10, 1934 and enjoyed seemingly constant readership for the next year, until November 2, 1935.  The book was then borrowed once in 1939 and twice in each calendar years of 1944, 1946, 1961, and 1966.  After enjoying some thirty two plus years on the library shelves, "Impersonation of a Lady" was withdrawn.  

Pasted in the inside back cover of the book are the "Selections From The Rules" of the Redwood Library.  Some of the rules of note are that:  overdue book fines increase the longer a book is overdue; not paying the overdue fines will debar one from the library; books cannot be lent to anyone outside the borrower's house; and, the very explicit defacement and damage criteria and consequences.

Nothing is known of the books whereabouts until late 2019.  Then, the book appeared in the donation box for used books that are resold by a library.  Deemed not salable nor donatable, it was relegated to the recycling bin; its story is told here.
