The bright red underwings of this one inch sized spotted insect were very obvious as it flew in to land nearby. After posing for several photos, showing off its spots and patterns, it hopped away. Looking up this bug revealed that it was a Spotted Lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula), an invasive species that causes damage to fruit and nut crops. The infestation is primarily in the mid-Atlantic and southern New England states and it is spreading. The recommended action, when spotting a spotted lanternfly: "SQUASH: Kill the insect".
